Join the RAS as we take an adventurous rafting tour along the scenic Dong-gang River in Gangwon province. The Dong River or Donggang is a serpentine, 60-kilometer-long stream flowing through rugged limestone terrain in mountainous Gangwon province's Yeongweol, Pyeongchang, and Jeongseon counties. Besides boasting breathtaking scenery, the Donggang is an ecological jewel–as it is the only remaining virgin territory in South Korea, boasting a wealth of rare flora and fauna. It is often compared to Guilin in China, a world famous tourist destination owing to its picturesque limestone mountains; however, the Dong River retains a more pristine and serene atmosphere, according to tourist experts.

Guided by environmentalists and conservationists this eco-tour is an extraordinary opportunity for Koreans and foreign residents alike to discover the unspoiled backwoods of the nation. The Dong River provides a natural habitat for wild ducks, herons, and such endangered feathered species as the painted goosander or "hosa biori" (호사 비오리) in Korean. The valley also features such rare animals as the otter, which is on the verge of extinction in the southern half of the peninsula. Until recently the Dong River was relatively unknown to most Koreans. For many years, the Korean government was discussing whether or not to build a dam. However, the government has decided not to build a dam so that it can preserve the natural habitat of the area.

Our rafting course is about 14-15 kilometers long and will take about 3 and 1/2 hours of rafting including a one-hour rest stop along the way. The course is rated Class II-III, suitable for novices and intermediates, and is excellent for the whole family! The course of the river that we will be taking is peaceful and not at all rough. This tour is aimed to be just a leisurely trip down the river, enjoying the scenery. The bus will depart from Yongsan Post Office (Subway line number 4, blue line, Shinyongsan Station #429 exit 1) at 8:00 a.m. On the way to Jeongseon we will briefly stop for a quick 20 minute coffee stop on the Yeongdong Highway. We will have lunch before we get on the rafting boat.

River rafting from JINTAN to SOBSE
We will arrive at Maha-ri (Jintan Naruteo) which is south of Jeongseon in Gangwon Province. Here we will pass through some small rapids and Tortoise Rock on our way to the Eorayon Valley. After 15 minutes of rest, we will get back into our boats for more rafting through the scenic valley. We will also visit a pebble beach near Eorayon Valley to look around beautiful scenery and then we will pass Doenkkokal Rapids. The boat trip will end at about 4:30 p.m. at Seopsae where the charter bus will be waiting for us to go home. Our return time will be 8:30 p.m. in Seoul.

** Participants should bring:
A packed lunch (however, you will also have the opportunity to purchase your lunch along the way), some dry clothes (you WILL get wet!!!) a towel, a pair of sport sandals, a waterproof camera, a cap and a waterproof bag to keep your things dry. Don't even bother to bring your cell phone because - they won't even work out there!
