Euljiro - or as some call it nowadays, "Hipjiro" - may now be Seoul's hottest dining and entertainment district. So hot it is, in fact, that it earned inclusion on TimeOut's 2018 list of the world's 50 coolest neighborhoods - at No. 2.   One of Seoul's older, grittier commercial districts, the neighborhood is still full print shops, small-scale metalworking shops and building supply stores... a recently started and controversial redevelopment project not withstanding.

Creatives and entrepreneurs are turning many of these old commercial and industrial spaces into atmospheric restaurants, cafes and bars that draw crowds of young people on the weekend. Many of these spaces blend in seamlessly with the urban environment - so much so that you might pass them by and not even know they are there.

Euljiro's new restaurant and bars enrich an already thriving dining scene that includes some of Seoul's time-honored eateries and drinking establishments, including the beer gardens of iconic "Nogari Alley."

The district is also home to the landmark Sewoon Sangga, a massive series of arcades/apartments that was one of the largest concrete structures in East Asia when it was completed in 1966. Designed almost as a city onto itself, the complex has seen its fortunate wax and wane over the decades. Thanks to an urban regeneration project launched by Seoul Metropolitan Government, however, the megastructure has been partially rejuvenated. And its roof garden provides some of the best views of the city.
