Every year, the RAS takes a one-day excursion to Chollipo Arboretum. This year will be no different, but in addition to the arboretum, we will also try to take in some of the other scenic spots of Taean Peninsula, one of Korea's most beautiful districts.

A long-time Korean resident and a former President of the RASKB, Mr. Ferris Miller (1921-2002) began the Chollipo Arboretum project in 1971, and over the years amassed a vast collection of some 6,000 taxa, including over 380 kinds of magnolias. This magnolia collection is the only one of its kind in Korea, and is one of the most extensive in the world. Many of the most spectacular magnolias should be in full bloom for this excursion. Spring blooming magnolias bloom over a long period, from the end of March to the end of May, so late April is the peak period.

Much of the coastline of the Taean Peninsula has been incorporated into Taeanhaean National Park, which includes not only 230 kilometers of seashore, but also 72 islands and 26 beaches. The highly irregular shoreline is comprised of many rias, or fjord-like estuaries created as seas rose at the end of the last Ice Age, flooding coastal river valleys. One of the highlights we hope to visit is the Sinduri dunes, Korea's most extensive system of natural sand dunes, which were created about 15,000 years ago. Another highlight we will visit is Kkotji Beach on the island of Anmyeondo. Famous for its Grandmother and Grandfather rocks, two craggy, weatherbeaten rocks rising out of the sea, the beach offers some of Korea's most romantic sunsets. If you've got a camera and a tripod, be sure to bring them along.

Excursion cost is KRW75,000 for members and KRW90,000 for non-members. This includes transportation and entrance fee for the arboretum. We will stop at a restaurant for lunch; lunch is not included in the price of the excursion. Our bus will leave at 8:30 am from the Yongsan Post Office (Sinyongsan, on the Blue Line/Line 4, subway station #429). Return is slated for the same day at 8:00 pm.
