Temple Stay at Ancient Asian Woodblock Museum

Meeting Point:  At 'Waiting room (맞이방)' on the 3rd floor, Cheongryangni train station (청량리역). At 09:00 a.m

The Gopanhwa museum is the Museum and Research Institute of Ancient Asian Woodblok Prints and is located at Myeongjusa temple on the mountain, Chiaksan, south of Wonju. The museum houses more than 4,000 ancient wood block prints created in Korea, China, Japan, Tibet and Mongolia. Monk Soon-Jae will be our host and teacher. The wood block print experience is imbedded into a 24-hour temple stay. We will begin our busy temple stay at 1:00 p.m. During this time, we will tour the museum to examine the woodblock carvings and prints up close and we will learn by doing. We will print on a t-shirt using an engraved wood block and learn printing techniques. Next, we will learn to carve a design on a wood block and use it to print. We will also experience traditional Buddist customs, meditation, and daily routines characteristic to a temple stay. Our meals will be traditional Buddhist temple food (Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast). We will sleep on floor mats in a new “Finnish-style” dormitory with about 4 persons per room. Each room has a bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. Sunday morning the monk will lead us in a meditation and speak with us about traditions of a Buddhist life. We will finish the temple stay on Sunday at 11 a.m. Then, we walk 1 kilometer to a local restaurant for mountain bibimbap. Then, we will return to Shillim train station, to catch a train to Cheongryangni station.

We will take the 9:34 a.m train from Cheongryangni train station and arrive Shillim station at 11:15. To return to Seoul, we will take the 1:13 p.m train from Sillim station, and arrive at Cheongryangni station at 2:50 p.m.

We will met at 9:00 a.m. Please be on time!
