This is an interesting guided visit to a major public ceremony honoring Korea’s Ancient Founding-King and then on up to Seoul’s center of Shamanic shrines and practice.  These are unusual but fascinating sites very close to busy and modern downtown;  our walking-tour will conveniently meet and finish at subway stations.  As the Shamanic shrines of Inwang-sa are built on a very steep slope, some short steep-uphill climbing is necessary on cement stairways and roads; but it's worth it!   October 3rd is always Gaecheon-jeol  [Opening of Heaven Day], and this year it falls on a Thursday.  This national holiday commemorates the mythical founding of Korea by the grandson of the Lord of Heaven, who became King Dan-gun Wanggeom 4352 years ago, it is said.  Our guide will explain the background myth and its continuing modern significance.  After visiting the Joseon-Dynasty Altars to the Earth and Harvest in Sajik Park, we will then visit the large shrine for King Dan-gun just up behind the park and watch some of the full-scale Neo-Confucian ritual held there by a private association of devotees.

Then we will proceed to walk for about 20 minutes up to the Inwang-sa area of Inwang-san, the very rocky mountain just west of Gyeongbok Palace, which has been the most active site of Korean shamanism for many hundreds of years.  We will see the Seon-bawi rocks, the Guksa-dang National Spirit Shrine, and get some great views of downtown Seoul.  We may or may-not see some live-action Shamanism happening right in front of us.  Please join us for this opportunity to see and learn some fundamental aspects of Korea’s Nationalist and Folk-Shamanic culture!
